Time: What is the Value?

Time: What is the Value?

  • Do we truly understand the concept of time or do we pretend to define it by using a clock and calendar?
  • What is time and how does it affect our perception of the world around us?
  • Are we rushing to meet deadlines – Are we in a rush to get our values and goals accomplished?
  • Do you find yourself rushing just for fun?
  • Are we rushing to accomplish more today than our ancestors were?
  • Do we accomplish more or less?
  • What is the value in time?

What if time was not an obstacle or a measuring point, but rather, an ally that provides us with an abundance of room for growth?
Would you opt out of your current condition for this option?
Sometimes having too much time is a burden and we look for opportunities to waste time.

Let me cut to the chase:

Time is the one valuable assest that is in constant depreciation and the one assest that we can not create.
I argue here that time is the most valuable asset we have and wasting time is like throwing away life.
We need to learn how to become more effective at managing our time – We can not throw it away for a few dollars an hour.
We need to maximize our value – We are valuable!

Discretionary Time = Wealth

Use your time wisely, prune off the activities that are dragging you down and
wasting your time, focus on what makes you happy, and dedicate your time to those wonderful areas.

Adapt or Perish – Maybe!

Adapt or Perish – Maybe!

Adapt is a substitute word for Change or Evolve.

Why are we resistant to Change, if history tells us that if we don’t change – we will die?

Answer: Change produces uncertainty, and we take stock in knowing what is coming next because it brings a sense of security.

Our genes are ingrained with the fight or flight syndrome in which we inherited from our ancestors.

The fallacy of this conformity – Knowing what is coming next; is that as humans,

we are unable to predict the future and unable to understand the complete concept of time.

Great civilizations and great organizations have perished because they decided to stay the course and not adapt to the new situation.
History is a learning tool, but it is obvious that this ingrained human flaw prevents us from overcoming obvious preventable obstacles.

We always say: I wish I would have known, I would have done it this way instead if I knew, or how did they not see that coming?

We all preach prevention, but are too content with the current situation to prevent future problems.

When a leader takes command and aims their energy at change, it takes many long years for a slight change to occur because the group majority is resistant to changing.

We wait until after the fact to respond to situations because we are forced into action for fear of distinction.

The fear of discontinuing our current comfort has driven us to overcome (fight).

I argue here, that we have the ability to change or adapt before the breaking point.

Why?

We are on the top of the food chain for a reason.

We as humans have overcome thousands of years of conflict, catastrophe, plagues, and war.

We have persevered to rule Earth, developed massive amounts of food, developed mind-bending technologies, and have nurtured mankind to almost 7 Billion people.

Personally, I don’t believe in doomsday prophecies, because I believe the future is untold, and we can change the world, but we need to do a better job of reacting to problems before they happen as a species in order to thrive safely into the next generation.

If we weren’t so resistant to change, the economic woes, the political unrest, famine,

and other unfortunate scenarios would be non-existent.

Call to action: become a leader of change; embrace the strength in acting to prevent.

Will it happen – I doubt it, but we are the most resilient people this world has ever seen – Maybe!

American Leadership Paradox

American Leadership Paradox

  • Are we at war with ourselves?
  • Why is the American political system so slow to act?
  • What is this struggle all about?
  • Tell me; is there someone here to blame?

Here is the short answer first:

We want a powerful altruistic Leader that makes quick decisions in our best interest, and provides us security,

BUT,

we are a nation of individualists who want to be the Leader, and are ashamed to be in the follower role.

Our culture looks down upon the follower and we admire the Leader.

  • Who do we want to be?

The leader of course – We are American!

Well, the problem; Leaders need followers!

If everyone is the Leader and no-one follows, then we have a problem:

It is called – The American Leadership Paradox!

  1. We want community and togetherness, but explicitly yearn for a capitalist society with the freedom to be an individual.
  2. We value family, but relish in the rebel persona.

Our culture is a paradox that tries to indulge on both ends of the spectrum.

Our Leaders are unable to lead because we choose to mock them instead of follow.

We display cognitive dissonance towards our Leaders

and believe that we could do a better job.

Maybe we could – If we work together.

The Nature/Nurture debate – Is it inborn or due to the situation?

Researchers determined this debate to be a 50/50 split.

If we are wonderful Leaders and our situation is not conducive to leading, then the cold hard truth is that Leaders will fail 50% of the time regardless of ability.

  • How do we survive in a Leaderless society?

Our models in family, business, politics, education, and more,

require a Leader who has power that is admired and followed.

  • Can we all be leaders without followers or is there another solution?

Currently, our Leaders are unethical, self-centered, and ruining our economy!

We as Americans, don’t trust the government, don’t trust commercials, don’t trust our neighbors, and don’t trust anything.

Why?

Is it because we are horrible people, you and I,

or is it because our system is coming to a breaking point?

  • Why do we tolerate unethical leadership?
  • Why do they act this way?

Short Answer: Our individualist system funneled these leaders to the pinnacle because they are the best players of the game our society created.

We tolerate them because, if they are our great Leaders, our elitist, and they are flawed, then we could possibly be better than them, and this perception sends our self-esteem sky rocketing.

We imagine that the positive regard they received could be said about us, because, of course, we are better.

The American Leadership Paradox!

  • How do we fix the Paradox?

My suggestions will be in part two of – The American Leadership Paradox.

Change, Vision, and Leadership: Let’s Change the World!

Change, Vision, and Leadership: Let’s Change the World!

What is it and how do we do it?

21st Century Competition: brings the concept of change to the forefront in Business, Education, Entertainment, Finance, Life, and is pervasive throughout all group processes effecting society at large and universally. Change brings stress on all levels but is inherently mandatory in our current society.

Rules for Successful Change Practice:

1. Victory is not certain until the complete change process is complete

2. Leadership must be fully committed to the process of change

3. Incentives are integral for short term wins by removing complacency

4. Effective Communication is Key to change efforts and needs to be clear and focused

 Transformational Leadership:

Conveys Vision; Directs the Movement; Aligns Motives; & Inspires Action

5. Refrain from frustrating employees with micro-managing daily processes

6. Develop and display a keen ability to adapt to the ever changing environments

7. Never underestimate forces that reinforce complacency which maintain status quo

Old Leadership: Command and control (Not Flexible)

New Leadership: Teams and creativity (Very Flexible)

Adversarial Factors Against Change:

1. Inwardly focused culture 2. Paralyzing Bureaucracy 3. Parochial Politics

4. Low Level of Trust 5. Lack of teamwork 6. Arrogance

7. Lack of leadership at the middle management 8. Fear of the unknown

(Information on these factors  1-8 derived from John Kotter’s, Leading Change)

What factors implement setbacks in organizational change?

Arresting Supervisors, Incongruent organizational structures, Incentive system, cultural norms, and Long-term peer relationships, HR Systems

Getting Change Projects to Work:

Mid-Level Leadership towards change is critical and enabling this effective Leadership is a Key component to the Change process.

Who do you, he, she, they, I care about?

Myself? Change has to be in one’s best interest or it will be rejected!

Leadership Keys to Change Success:

1. Incorporate a sacrifice into the mission that everyone can get behind

2. Promise higher benefits in return for change loyalty

3. Provide clear vision that makes sense for all involved after completion of change

4. Make ambitious goals look easy to implement

Questions to ask yourself and others involved:

Do you agree with and follow blindly what you are told?

Do you candidly voice your position with charisma and tact?

Did you know that the employees that are candid in an appropriate way climb the corporate ladder faster and earn more money than their peers?

Are you alarmed about the current economic situation we are facing globally? NO

Why not?

Because: Put a frog in warm water, slowly heat it, the frog will stay in the warm water until it boils and they die. They don’t get out when it gets too hot. Why?

Because: They are unable to sense immediate danger due to complacency and by the time they felt like getting out of the hot water: It was too Late.

Build your Elite Team with these Concepts

How to build an Elite Efficient Team

Based on:

Harvard Business Review on Teams That Succeed

http://www.amazon.com/Harvard-Business-Review-Succeed-Paperback/dp/159139502X

There are three (3) types of teams:

Teams that:

1)    Recommend things (task force or project group)

2)    Make or do things (operations or marketing)

3)    Run things (oversee functional activity)

Leadership must Link teams to performance & Don’t let these terms (Teams & Performance) become a cliché.

Needed team skills

Technical or functional expertise to handle specific tasks

Problem solving & decision making skills

Interpersonal skills:

  1. Effective communication
  2. Constructive conflict
  3. Objectivity
  4. Active listening
  5. Recognizing interests
  6. Achievement of others

We need to be accountable as a team (mutual accountability)

We hold ourselves accountable”

“When teams work together toward a common objective trust and commitment follow”

  1. Achievement must be mutually shared
  2. Teams need to have a common purpose
  3. Shared leadership

How do we get Individual and mutual accountability?

  1. Open ended communications and active problem solving meetings
  2. Need to establish performance goals that relate to overall purpose
  3. Objective measureable goals

Failed teams rarely develop a common purpose

How do we get higher levels of productivity?

Groups are more creative and productive when:

  1. They achieve high levels of participation, cooperation, and collaboration
  2. Real time learning is important for teams to develop faster
  3. Continuity of team members builds familiarity
  4. Clearly express urgency and worthwhile purposes
  5. Clearly express expectations to new team members

Build group emotional intelligence = enhances overall effectiveness

EQ Factors:

Trust among members, sense of group identity, and sense of group efficacy (effectiveness)

Attitude and behavior need to support above factors

  1. Leaders need to admit fault when they are wrong
  2. Leaders must be available
  3. Leaders need to ask for input
  4. Open-mindedness, enthusiasm
  5. Ability to introduce new methods so team can learn from trial and error

Teams where members feel comfortable making suggestions

New members can:

  1. Try things that might not work
  2. Point out potential problems

Leadership:

  1. Leadership needs to reassure this is safe
  2. Essence of a team is shared commitment

Decision Making

  1. Not a singular event – It is a process
  2. Inquiry process (getting everyone involved)
  3. Provide Constructive feedback
  4. Variety of options
  5. Serious consideration to all view points
  6. Know when to bring deliberations to a close

Leaders and managers need to make sure they keep contact with teams to see what is going on and that everything is okay because if contact is lost then teams feel disengaged from management and create their own rules which lead to failure.

The best teams lull their leaders and managers to sleep.

Ways to prevent

  1. Performance measures
  2. Reward structure
  3. Hands on presence from leadership

Overcoming Adversity: (Part 2 of 2)

Overcoming Adversity: (Part 2 of 2)

Conclusion

(I know you’re in suspense!)

Part 1 offered this thought: People don’t live up to their potential because they are told they can’t!

How do we overcome this negativity?

The power of success is within us and we have to understand that we all face adversity regardless of where we come from which is why adversity is a natural occurrence.

1.     Self discipline: develop a mental attitude that controls emotions, sexuality, eating; control what you say by thinking before you speak and focus your mind on positive actions to gain mental peace.

2.    Acquire a pleasing personality that improves your likeability factor.

Personality is within your control and this aspect of the self causes people to like and dislike us.

Personality can be controlled through self discipline in controlling your reactions and the direction of your enthusiasm.

Let other people speak instead of leading the conversation and be careful of the sarcasm that is used during conversation because it can trigger negativity in your audience.

Hint from Napoleon Hill:

Finding fault with the world at large is not pleasing to others and indifference when others are speaking is resented.

Don’t flatter where it is not deserved because it comes off as insincere and you lose trust.

Don’t talk about your problems and communicate on the level of others. (He’s the best).

3.    Most of all: Uncompromising faith in seeing your success out till the end.

Being able to see something where there is nothing is what makes the average great.

Defeat is life’s test to you.

Get rid of all doubts and you will get as far as the amount of faith you have in succeeding.

4.    Always exceed expectations!

5.    Lastly, form an alliance with a trusted co-partner whether your Mom, Dad, Sister, Brother, Wife, Husband.

As long as you have full trust and clear communication your togetherness will provide a compounding of success.

This will get you past your limit and get you to the next level.

I have faith that you will embrace your struggles and choose not to take the line of least resistance.

Financial Freedom vs. Financial Security

Financial Freedom vs. Financial Security

Do you want a job that pays you a lot of money at the
expense of all personal costs?

Is financial security more important than financial freedom?

Are you willing to advert having a loving family and
discretionary time to labor at a job that might not be interesting or fun in
return for a large sum of money?

Both choices are a personal preference and there is no right or wrong answer.

What is financial freedom?

Financial freedom does not define a high paying job but,
rather, is defined by having an enjoyable life and the choice of the premiere situation
that makes you the happiest at that moment.

Would you enjoy taking a vacation at any moment you desired?
How about waking up each day and deciding what you would like to do that day
and doing it? How does having a family and truly enjoying every moment sound?
How about having a job that you truly enjoy from the people you work with, your
boss, and the tasks that you decide to take on and accomplish? In short, no one
dictates your life but YOU.

This is what financial freedom is and this is the aim of our generation.

There is an old saying that says, “You can’t take it with
you”. This is true, but great wealth has been left for the enjoyment of
future relatives. But, is that always what is best? People tend to not
appreciate money as much when it is not earned and fortune over time does not
bring true happiness.

Money brings power!

Mo Money Mo Problems”- Maybe?

Does money bring true love, happiness, and respect? Or, are there other
variables involved in garnering this type of adoration?

My personal belief is that we should strive to enjoy the
life we have today, and to set up a pleasant life through financial freedom for
us, our family, and our friends around us.

How?

This is a bigger question that we will cut short by
saying, each of us needs to find our path to financial freedom and there are
multiple paths to this personal euphoria.

The better question is, “What is your definition of Financial Freedom”?

When you define that – set up an action plan to get it and live in your success.
