The Secrets of Professional Coaching
Professional business and life coaching is action-focused and results-oriented. Coaches enable clients to enhance their focus on developing successful solutions and to mitigate self-defeating beliefs about their performance.
Coaches have and instill a single-minded focus on achievement.
Professional Coaching is not for everyone and not all coaches are created equal.
Coaching is a learned discipline and a powerful medium between therapy, mentoring, and consulting. The character traits needed to be an exceptional coach are many and begin with the ability to truly listen and discern meaningful information in real-time. Also, the ability to manage empathy at its highest level is essential for developing the necessary connection between coach and client that leads to synergistic success. Furthermore, the ability to understand the client’s personal and professional position in life and to provide overly valuable and timely feedback that challenges and motivates the client to develop relative skills to improve is an essential skill.
Coaching provides the client with a competitive advantage over the competition and enables an intense learning experience about oneself and the respective situation at an accelerated speed. This style of learning greatly enhances self-esteem and self-awareness inside the confines of a secure and confidential experience with a qualified personal coach.
A coaching candidate requires the ability to handle unbiased feedback that at times can challenge self-identity. A potential client should be resilient enough to overcome self-doubt and to meet predetermined goals for overall improvement. A determined need to be successful in life is a prerequisite for an outstanding client. Ultimately, having a coach is a fashion statement which says to the world that you are an overachiever who has the ability to employ a professional coach to maximize performance, potential, and opportunity.
Quality coaching is not cheap and the cost of coaching is relative to the expertise and support that is provided. A coach should constantly challenge their belief system and make constant changes for improvement in their personal and professional development. A coach should walk the talk and have a total commitment to the craft of coaching.
Coaching branches off into niches and specialties because of targeting a specific market and expanding from that specialized foundation, but coaching skills are universal and apply to multiple levels in personal and professional development. A truly skilled coach has the ability to adapt to the situation and rework their coaching tools to conform to the desired goals of their client.
Education is the ultimate equalizer and utilizing a coach to enhance personal and professional development to maintain equilibrium in today’s fast-paced, 24/7 globalized environment is becoming a mandatory choice for continued excellence.
Why are some leaders exceptionally better than their counterparts? Why do some workers always excel in their work? Why are some parents better than others? They have a confidential secret that enables them to create an intense focus on achievement and that secret is professional coaching.

Strategy Demystified
The term strategy is widely used and applied to many processes and situations in which are not strategy. The concept of strategy is misused in many circumstances and not truly understood. Most people look like a deer in the headlights when “Strategy” is mentioned. The following is a quick and concise guide to understanding “Strategy”. The thought leader behind the following is Richard P. Rumelt and his book is “Good Strategy – Bad Strategy” and I highly recommended it.
“A good strategy honestly acknowledges the challenges being faced and provides an approach to overcoming them….Strategy selects the path, identifying how, why, and where leadership and determination are to be applied” – Richard P. Rumelt
There are three (3) elements of strategy:
- Diagnosing the challenge
- Guiding the policy
- Taking reasoned action
- First you have to “define the challenge” in order to create a strategy.
- The strategy has to be practical and has to address the critical issues instead of ignoring them.
Goals are not strategies – This is a common mistake so make sure you understand the difference.
“Strategy defines the framework for taking action to meet goals” –Keith Lawrence Miller
Defining a strong strategy
- A strong strategy stands a strong chance of accomplishing its mission.
- A strong strategy builds strength through its design.
- A strong strategy applies strengths to the most promising opportunity.
- A strong strategy allows for mission pivots or timely adjustments to deal with new conflicting information.
- When creating a strategy, you always need to consider the competition.
Questions to Create a Strong Strategy
- What are the competitions strengths and weaknesses?
- What are our strengths and weaknesses?
- Where are the leverage points?
- Where are the opportunities?
- What are the risks involved?
- How can we put pressure on the competition to take away their focus from their strengths?
- What is the hidden power of the situation that neither side has identified?
“Leadership needs more than charisma and vision – Leadership needs a solid strategy” – Richard P. Rumelt and Keith Lawrence Miller (combined)

The Stigma and Power of Coaching
A long time ago I was introduced to the concept of coaching and was caught off guard. I thought to myself, “What is this stuff?” I perceived coaching as a made up specialty and awkwardly strange. My initial judgment was flawed because I was not educated about the coaching discipline. I thought coaching was a bunch of fluff and I did not take it seriously at first.
I was introduced to the world of coaching as a student/client and the encounter was uncomfortable at first because I had to remove my defense mechanisms and allow my ego and sense of self to be challenged. My first assumption was that the coach was going to contradict my beliefs and behaviors, but that assumption turned out to be false. The coach held our space in confidentiality and genuinely accepted my perceptions of reality. The coach provided a support system that allowed me to become comfortable in the situation and introduced thought provoking questions that helped me gain a greater understanding of the overall situation.
This is when I came face-to-face with the power of coaching. Coaching was not about an individual telling me what to do and how I am doing everything all wrong, but rather, coaching is about accepting me as I am and allowing me to investigate myself with my own judgment of right and wrong. I was the one with the power to make the final decisions and the coach was there as a guiding, support system that brought additional awareness and empowerment. The enhanced perspective always brought out new findings about who I am, what I stand for, why I judge, why I feel certain ways, and more.
Today, leveraging the power of coaching and building relationships with other coaches has positively contributed to my lifestyle and enhanced my communicating abilities with family, friends, and other professionals. I have achieved a greater understanding of myself in a shorter period of time than I would have without the coaching experience. I am more equipped to overcome challenges and better able to achieve higher levels of success because of the coaching engagement.
Coaching has a stigma attached to it. Generally, we do not want our ego to be vulnerable and there needs to be a lot of trust involved before someone commits to coaching. There needs to be several interactions before someone is comfortable enough to make the commitment. We don’t get into long-term relationships with people we don’t know (i.e. marriage) .
Those who are most likely to purchase coaching are the ones who have already had a positive experience with coaching. Coaching is about repeat customers and referrals. This is a testament to the power of the coaching experience. “Coaching clients understand the value of coaching and others are in the dark about the unique benefits that enable high performers to consistently outperform their competitive counterparts.”
Coaching is dominated by women practitioners at an average of 80 percent. This provides a competitive advantage for male practitioners because there is a different dynamic that takes place with a male coach when compared to a female coach. All male coaches are not created equal. There are different techniques and styles that create the necessary relationship that brings out the best in the client. Finding an exceptional male coach that fits your specific needs is not a simple procedure, but when this relationship is formed it creates incredible forward momentum for the client that rapidly multiplies.
As a professional coach, I have had female coaches and male coaches. Each coach had a unique style that contributed to my overall development. There were different comfort levels and different dynamics that came into play when discussing critical issues. Some coaches brought out additional insight that initially went unseen and others had expert communication styles that enhanced my understanding of certain topics. An expert coach knows how to communicate in a way that does not offend the client and provides the necessary support that allows the client to break new barriers and gain an incredible sense of self that was previously extinct.

Jack Lalanne, 60 Minutes, and the truth about Sugar and Obesity
60 Minutes televised a segment about new research findings concerning the negative effects of sugar. These findings have been claimed as breakthrough and I find this hard to believe. In the U.S., we live in a society that is deemed over 50% obese and our food choices are filled with an abundance of sugar. Do we really need science to give us a definitive answer about the negative effects of sugar before we make a change as a society?
Financially funded long years of research has told us what we have known all along. Have we chosen to neglect the truth? The truth we knew well over fifty years ago…
Jack Lalanne lived a healthy lifestyle till the age of 96 and was an advocate against sugar and processed foods. He achieved great feats in old age that youthful people could only dream of doing. He talked about eating healthy to live healthy well over 50 years ago and science has finally proven him right.
**1984 (age 70): handcuffed, shackled, and fighting strong winds and currents, towed 70 rowboats, one with several guests, from the Queen’s Way Bridge in the Long Beach Harbor to the Queen Mary, 1 mile.
The truth is that Jack Lalanne was right about the negative effects of sugar all along and people have been prospering from his humanitarian efforts since the beginning. He brought popularity to exercise and developed gyms that transformed the American lifestyle (Bally’s Total Fitness).
Jack Lalanne was a pioneer and a leader. He brought us the gift of living a healthier life and by extension, a more fruitful existence. Those who implemented his advice have flourished and those who denied his advice in exchange for a quick fix of sugar have paid a dear price.
The ability to postpone gratification has time and again been a proven component for living successfully.
We need to pay tribute to a great leader, Jack Lalanne, who cared about the health of our people. He spread his knowledge to the masses without waiting decades for approval from scientific research to provide insurmountable evidence.
Leaders accept the truth and act responsibly on behalf of others. Leadership begins with the self and the ability to control instant gratification is an indicator of inner strength. This inner strength creates an echoing effect on everyone within contact.
“Jack Lalanne touched the lives of us all and needs the recognition he deserves as a great leader and pioneer.”

Adapt to Thrive and Survive
“Be like water, my friend” – Bruce Lee
A radical idea at the time that predated the legend of the dragon and a phrase that ignited the phenomenon of mixed martial arts. “Be like water, my friend” is a simple, yet complex statement that changed the thinking and behaviors of millions of people. Bruce Lee was a revolutionary; a forward thinker who died before his prime and has been enshrined as a legend. He understood the law of adapting on a deeper level through self-experimentation, deep personal insight, and a superior level of self-awareness.
He was a study of one and he shared his findings with the world. The public has generally accepted and adopted his methods after decades of thorough research. Bruce Lee was right, we do need to be like water and adapt to our situation. If we are a metal then we bend and break; if we are wood then we will burn and if we are a plastic then we will melt. We need to go with the flow of life and react when there is an opportunity. We need to be brave and patient during challenging times.
The future is dependent on what Earth lets us have and we will have to conform to the new changes that will occur in the future. Prosperity and enlightenment take place during times when the Earth is pleasant and happy. Global warming is presenting a conflicting circumstance and we need to be prepared to adapt. We need to be prepared for a change in our living habits and those who do not adapt to what the Earth will allow us to have will perish.
We as individuals can accept the truth whether there has been decades of expensive research or if one person has come up with the answer. The truth is the truth. Yes we need proof, but sometimes we need to go with our instinct and enact the truth into our lives. We do not need to wait for others to give us the green light or to follow the crowd of early adopters.
Bruce Lee was a leader because he influenced people to be better. He had the courage to present his revolutionary ideas and was brave enough to enter a foreign world without knowing he would be accepted. People are doing incredible things today that the rest of the world has yet to learn about and we will learn about the value of these new ways in the future. The world is changing and there will be opportunities to present your novel ideas. Will you have the courage and bravery needed to lead out front with the whole world watching and criticizing? Will you be able to be adaptable like water and express the heart of a leader?
These abilities to lead are within us all and we all have the power to be like water. We are made mostly of water and water is our will to survive. Without water we would die. “Be like water, my friend”.

80/20 Rule Unmasked
80 percent of everything is created by 20 percent of everything. 80 percent of every situation is controlled by 20 percent of the processes.
The Pareto Principle, or better known as the 80/20 rule is the most productive rule known, and using its power as leverage produces extraordinary results. The best part is that the 80/20 rule can be applied by anyone and everyone in all situations.
Applying the 80/20 rule to what you do in life and in business produces the optimum return on investment (ROI) for everything you do including use of time and financial success.
80 percent of the value you create will be determined by 20 percent of your activities.
Sample Situations
20 percent of us do the 80 percent of the cheating in relationships
20 percent of us commit 80 percent of the crimes
20 percent of us control 80 percent of the wealth
80 percent of your wealth comes from 20 percent of your clients
80 percent of your time is controlled by 20 percent of the content
20 percent of your clients are responsible for 80 percent of your problems in business
Fixing 20 percent of the causes will eliminate 80 percent of the problems
20 percent of patients use 80 percent of healthcare resources
80 percent of leadership success is achieved by focusing on 20 percent of the activities
*The 80/20 rule is an average– most situations are not perfectly 80/20. Instead they are rounded off to 80/20. Examples: 79/21, 72/28, 85/15, 90/10, 70/30.
Identify what provides the fastest return on investment and focus all your time and resources on doing only that.
Identify what activities take up most of your time and stop doing it.
Make these two changes to the way you do things and watch your free time increase, your happiness grow, and your success flourish.
